The World Championships took place in Szeged in Hungary, which is a few hours outside Budapest on a purpose built course for rowing/canoeing.
You never quite know how it is going to go after all the training as it is still really a purely amateur sport so you don’t know the quality of the crews who have entered as they will all have had to pay their own way, which to some extent governs which countries attend and who is in the crew.
Tao had a good contingent of competitors with 3 in the Premier Open crew, 2 in the Junior crew and 8 in the Senior B crew, along with Liz as crew manager for the Senior B’s and Murray on the live race streaming commentary.
Our Wraysbury members were Paul Atkins, Ian Bowers, Martin Corless, Clive Hearn, Mick Roach, Colin Smith and John Wennington, all in the Senior B crew.
They did extremely well in a high quality field to come back with 1 silver (200M) and 2 bronze (2000M and 500M) medals, the same medal haul as Tampa 2 years before, but a slightly different even mix.
The other crews fared less well, but did come back with some medals in the smaller 10 person class boats.
Below are the league tables which see Tao sitting 3rd and 2nd respectively after 5 events
